Design Process
Leopards & Rhinos & Tigers, Oh My! Notelet Boxset is a packaged boxset comprised of eight illustrated animal notelets and eight envelopes to spread awareness about endangered and critically endangered animals. The effortless and imaginative design allows for an engaging user experience.
01. Key Insights
I researched credible wildlife sources, including World Wildlife Fund and National Geographic, to accurately determine important details about the eight animals featured in the project: Asian Elephant, Amur Leopard, Black Rhino, Golden Lion Tamarin, Okapi, Red Panda, Sunda Tiger, San José Brush Rabbit.
• Reference photos of the animals to correctly represent how the animals look
• Correct information about each animal: an interesting fact, place of origin, conservation status, reason for endangerment, and how many are left in the wild.
02. Notelets Draft One
I determined the size of the notelets to be 6 inches X 4 inches based on the size of an average postcard. In Procreate I drew the animal outlines for the front of each of the notelets.

03. Notelets Draft Two
In Procreate I added depth to the animal drawings by layering colors. Using InDesign I started designing the back of the notelets to include lines for messages and information about the project. The endangerment levels of the animals are written in red to emphasize their importance.

05. Notelets Draft Four
The animal drawings are almost done. On the back of the notelets I put the lines back in to more clearly indicate a placement for handwritten messages. I removed the box around the information for a cleaner look.

06. Notelets Final Design
I completed the animal drawings. On the backs the information is placed on top of the project title because it makes more hierarchal sense. Also, the project title is now colorful to make it pop.

07. Packaging Part One
I drew in Procreate an initial drawing of the box to determine the look and functionality of the packaging.

08. Packaging Part Two
Using pencil and paper I determined the size of the different parts of the box so that the notelets can fit well into the box. The measurements for the box are 7 inches X 5 inches X 0.375 inches.

09. Packaging Final Design
I created the final box design in InDesign. I kept the box the same dark green color I used in the initial drawing to represent animals in the wild. On the front of the box the project name is written in the same color and font as on the back of the notelets. The inner box fold has images of the all the animals on it. The back of the box explains the goal of the project as well as the contents of the boxset.

11. Physical Product Prototype
I wanted to determine how boxset would look and function in real life so I made a physical prototype of it. I printed out the eight notelets, printed the box design and assembled it, and created eight envelopes.
The Leopards & Rhinos & Tigers, Oh My! Notelet Boxset provides people a way to learn about endangered animals in an inviting way. The bright colors utilized for the animal drawings and playful font used for the project title make the serious topic of endangered animals engaging. In alignment with this, the animal drawings are done an illustrative style.
